"I have been called a curmudgeon, which my obsolescent dictionary defines as a 'surly, ill-mannered, bad-tempered fellow'. Nowadays, curmudgeon is likely to refer to anyone who hates hyprocrisy, cant, sham, dogmatic ideologies, and has the nerve to point out unpleasant facts and takes the trouble to impale these sins on the skewer of humor and roast them over the fires of fact, common sense, and native intelligence. In this nation of bleeting sheep and braying jackasses, it then becomes an honor to be labeled curmudgeon." ~Edward Abbey
If this is what a curmudgeon is, then perhaps I would not mind being/becoming one....

Hmm, yes I'm one, I think.
ReplyDeleteI've been reading a blog you might like called
hermit's thatch and some old posts refer to misanthropes and hermits ....as I age I certainly see curmudgeons and misanthropes very differently and with greater insight, if not, becoming one myself. :)
Me, too!
ReplyDeleteGleaner,
ReplyDeleteI smiled big when I read your comment. :)
Thank you.
Yes, I am familiar with Hermit's Thatch, though I have not visited in a long time. Perhaps I shall have to give it another look again soon....
Amy,
ReplyDelete!
:)
Curmudgeons are not people who unite to form parties -- and that's a damned shame. The country is badly in need of a Curmudgeon Congress.
ReplyDeleteJune, ain't it the truth. Thanks for the visit and the comment!
ReplyDeleteI agree with what June said. I'm 36, is that too young to be a curmudgeon? My friends don't seem to think so. My husband is 4 years younger than I and he's far surpassed me in my curmudgeonliness (is that a word?) Having said that, I'd like to proclaim that I'm happy to be one and I have no intention of turning off this path and joining the "others." Also, thank you for introducing me to Edward Abbey through your wonderful, thought-provoking blog.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mountain Mama for your thoughts on this. Thank you for your visit.
ReplyDeletePeace to you, my fellow northerner in Carolina exile. :)
As noted elsewhere pleased to have found your blog space. I too once pastored, find myself a naturalist/atheist, with strong Taoist Buddhist leanings (Zen) and proud to be a ecclesiastical outlaw. Guide trips into the wilderness, train athletes and myself, regard Thoreau, Muir, Dawkins, Abbey, TT Williams, Berry, Sagan... Lover of huskies, canyons, alpine, paleo history, evolution, and definitely silence and solitude...among much else life has to offer. Really happy and free to have killed that buddha (God) off. Sheww.
ReplyDeleteHigh Mesa Fitness,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the visits to this old and mostly dead blog, and for your kind comments. Much appreciated. It does indeed sound like we have very much in common. I don't blog much, if at all anymore, though once upon a time this blog was pretty jumpin' with readers. But I found that it took up too much of my time and took me away from living life. Which is what I am busy doing now. Too busy doing the stuff right now, I guess, to write about it much. Also, it got to the point where the blog seemed narcissistic to me, like "Hey, look how cool and together I am. Listen to me." What a crock of shit. Anyway, thanks again for the visit and comments. Peace to you.
Absolutely! It will take me a while to read it all anyway yet I understand. Its probably one reason I don't put many entries in my blog over at FieldNotes http://highmesafitness.blogspot.com/ .
ReplyDeleteFeel free to email me as I would be interested in talking shop now and then. highmesafitness@bresnan.net

High Mesa,
ReplyDeleteI approve. :) Thanks. I have it on my list to e-mail you one of these days when I come up for air. Peace to you.
