April Snow

April Snow

...and still it snows.
Two days ago the temps were balmy.
The ground though brown was free of snow,
and the buds were threatening
to finally burst forth.
Today all is white again,
like mid-January.
It is the 11th of April.

And still it snows.
So white, so heavy, so driven,
I can barely make out
the building across the road.

This room is warm, comfy, and silent.
And yet, the unexpected
cold and storm outside
matches cold and storm
so unexpectedly descended
into my life.

And yet I do not think of that
here in the stillness.
I think of a sick friend,
so seemingly unfair.
Of a friend battling depression
and life transition.
A friend who has lost
close and precious kin.
A friend who hurts to see
a loved one self destroy.

The world is full of cold and storms,
and even in them may lay
a terrible white and glorious beauty.

And still it snows...in April,
and the drifts are deep.
But one day we will walk again
with sun and leaf and birdsong
and rippling water, and
for another season, our souls
will not feel cold and darkness.

But now it still snows....
