I hope he means what he says and is able to carry it out.
From the Climate Progress blog:
In a landmark radio address today, President-elect Barack Obama announced his powerful science team and the end to Bush’s war on science, saying:
Today, more than ever before, science holds the key to our survival as a planet and our security and prosperity as a nation. It’s time we once again put science at the top of our agenda and worked to restore America’s place as the world leader in science and technology.

Finally, a president who understands that science is an intellectual pursuit, not the enemy of religion and not necessarily the enemy of the environment. Obama has attracted an impressive team and that speaks well of him and his intentions.
ReplyDeleteVery well said, Barbara. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI hope this marks the beginning of the end for things like the encroachment of "intelligent design" in schools as well. You can be sure the Chinese are not teaching their best and brightest anything but the most accurate science.
ReplyDeletePaul,
ReplyDeleteTrue that. I share your hopes on this one. Thanks for reading and commenting.
He's got to mean it, surely!... surely?
ReplyDeleteDave,
ReplyDeleteHope springs up within me. Is it enough hope to overcome the cynicism that seems to have become so automatic, the cynicism that has been fueled by a lifetime of politicians empty and broken promises and the general hubris and egotism that seems to come with the political territory apparently?
I do hope so. I hold my breath.
Surely this man means the best and is leaps and bounds of improvement over the disaster that was these last eight years.
PS Thanks for the visit and the comment Dave. :)
ReplyDeleteI hate to throw a wet blanket on all this euphoria, but has anyone noticed the tenor of most of Obama's nominated cabinet members to date? It doesn't look nor feel like change! He keeps selecting individuals that are Clinton holdovers or folks that the Right seems pleased as punch with.
ReplyDeleteObama has a slick PR team and he seems to say all the right things, but I don't think we're going to get the kind of administration that most liberals anticipate.
From what I've seen thus far, I'm afraid the only difference between the Obama team and the last 8 years is that we will be led by a charismatic leader as opposed to a doofus who always looks like a deer caught in the headlights.
RT,
ReplyDeleteWhaddya know, someone who is more cynical than I. ;) (I cover my cynicism here on the blog and try not to let it show too much....)
Thank you, and your views are always welcome. :)
I'm willing to give Team Obama the benefit of the doubt for the time being. I'm eager to see what they do rather than get too pessimistic about who they are, at least at this point. (And even that Rick Warren thing...I'm counting on that having some calculated benefit several plays further on the chessboard. Perhaps I am naive.)
ReplyDeletePaul,
ReplyDeleteI am dismayed by the choice of Rick Warren, but yes, I am trying to remain optimistic, give the benefit of the doubt and see what happens.
@ Paul:
ReplyDelete"And even that Rick Warren thing...I'm counting on that having some calculated benefit several plays further on the chessboard. Perhaps I am naive.)"
Absolutely. If there's one thing I'm certain of, it is that Obama is NOT stupid. He didn't do this to piss off the left. He did this to bring in the right. He's already got liberal support. Now he needs to get some conservatives to join the movement.
He is a keen strategist indeed.
