"Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it." ~Soren Kierkegaard
"Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time." ~Steven Wright
"Perhaps the truth depends on a walk around the lake." ~Wallace Stevens
"I haven't got any special religion this morning. My God is the God of Walkers. If you walk hard enough, you probably don't need any other god." ~Bruce Chatwin, In Patagonia, 1977
"I stroll along serenely, with my eyes, my shoes, my rage, forgetting everything." ~Pablo Neruda
I'm always happy to see walking emphasized, especially in the wild country. I don't know of any other effort that brings such a great return!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Montucky. Thanks for the visit and the comment. :)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if there is an inner, spiritual equivalent to physical walking. For example, there are a lot of people who have physical limitations and cannot walk. A few years ago I listened to Christopher Reeves (Superman) read his book about life after the accident which broke his back. He seemed to have found some inner-person who had all the capacities that he had lost. The same is true of the French man (can't remember his name, a movie was made out of his book, something about a butterfly) who was trapped inside his body.
ReplyDeleteBeth,
ReplyDeleteExcellent point; thank you. I do think you're totally on to something with that train of thought.
