Nicollet Mall, Downtown Minneapolis (photo source)

I think I've written before here that as a function of my employment, I often see the city in the hours when few others do.... And if you know me, you know that suits me just fine....

This is not strictly a haiku perhaps, but it is written in the 5-7-5 haiku style:

Morning fog, wet ground,
dog bark, distant headlights, me.
The city still sleeps.

  1. I share your love for the wee hours of the morning...but not in the big city. :-)

  2. I used to stay up most of the night, going to sleep after sunrise and getting up 4-5 hours later. Had several night-shift jobs, too, which suited me fine.

Nowadays, I go to bed before midnight and get up about 6:00 a.m. Getting old, I guess. But when I travel, I often find myself in cities or on the road during the wee hours…and I still like that isolated, alien, feel, with hints of loneliness and danger.
