Beth, John Muir was far from a hobo. He sinply traveled light.
I'm not talking about being a hobo either. I'm talking about simplicity, traveling light, and just "getting out there" into nature, taking a walk, just doing it...more than I was able to in 2008.
I think Beth has a point, though - I've often struggled with the idea whether my own long walks are escapes from something, escapes into something, or a mixture of the two.
I suppose it's got to be a mixture of the two. Aspirational Middle-Way Buddhist that I am!
"More than any time in history mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness, the other to total extinction. Let us pray that we have the wisdom to choose correctly." ~Woody Allen
"Things are going to get a lot worse before they get worse." ~Lily Tomlin
"We must face the prospect of changing our basic ways of living. This change will either be made on our own initiative in a planned way, or forced on us with chaos and suffering by the inexorable laws of nature." ~Jimmy Carter
One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am — a reluctant enthusiast... a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this; You will outlive the bastards." ~Edward Abbey, from a speech to environmentalists in Missoula, Montana in 1978 and in Colorado, which was published in High Country News under the title "Joy, Shipmates, Joy."
"What I fear most is despair for the world and us: forever less of beauty, silence, open air, gratitude, unbidden happiness, affection, unegotistical desire ~Wendell Berry, from IX, Sabbaths 1998, in Given
you gotta be kidding me??! a hobo life is ok as long as you're not running away :-)
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite Muir quotes…and a worthy lifestyle attitude that ought to be implemented more often.

I guess that wasn't clear.
Grizzled. Thanks. I'm glad you understand.
ReplyDeleteA great quote - you know I like this one!

I think figuring out what's in one's heart is the hard part. . .
ReplyDeleteSo, if you've know what's in your heart, then I say just make it happen.
Pretty simple, eh?
: )
SW,
ReplyDeleteThanks. As far as I can tell...I'm nor running from anything. I may be walking to something....
I was not aware that you were an "Aspirational Middle-Way Buddhist." :)
Val,
As you probably are well aware, simple does not necessarily mean easy. :)
Thanks to all for the comments.
Peace
Aspiring only. Perspiring always.
ReplyDeleteZen appeals to me hugely - spiritually, emotionally, intellectually. But I can never make that leap from rock to creek (ref Snyder's 'Piute Creek').
Who knows what will transpire in 2009?
Peace to you too.
Don't forget to take a cup for that tea! ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Sylvia the fully prepared planner. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Great quote, great photo and great comments. Wishing you a simple 2009.
ReplyDeleteTess,
ReplyDeleteSimply put:
Thank you and backatcha. :)
Your year ahead will be great. I really believe it!

ReplyDeleteIt'll happen.
