Nice one. And a good follow-up to yesterday's post. Herzog is one of my favourite film directors! Check out my own post about him under 'Werner Herzog' in my LABELS list.
ReplyDeleteWill do, SW; thanks. :)
ReplyDeleteA bit less serendipitous than Muir’s approach. Also more the pessimist’s apprehension of that which might befall. I suspect you’d have a better day afield with old John.
ReplyDeleteThanks Grizzled. It seems that among your many talents you are also a connoisseur of packing lists. :)
ReplyDelete“Connoisseur” is, I assure you, giving me too much credit aforethought.
ReplyDeleteI used to travel under what you might call “Grizzled’s Law of Preparedness” which dictated that if you owned it, take it…’cause if you didn’t, you’d surely find out—much to your discomfort and regret—that you ought to have done so. Which is why I’ve owned generations of pickup trucks with camper shells and the cargo space of a 747.
Then I read in one of Bruce Chatwin’s books (Songlines, I think) of the fellow whose home was literally in his custom-built pack. Not only did the notion of such a pared-down life appeal to me, but it also reminded me that so many of my most memorable adventures have occurred when I simply ambled off the sidewalk, roadway, path, beach, whatever, with open an open mind, open eyes…and maybe a bottle of water in case all the gaping made me thirsty.
Besides, I'm too disorganized to remember to scribble out a packing list.
Grizzled,
ReplyDeleteGreat story, thanks. I'm glad you've seen the light of traveling light(er). :)
Glad to have found this fantastic book (Journeys of Simplicity) - as well as enjoying the poetry of the lists I'm pondering my own penchant for carrying devices to meet all possible eventualities...
ReplyDeleteMister Roy,
ReplyDeleteVery cool. I'm glad. :)
